Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant

The Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant Outfall Project undertook a massive scope to ensure safe drinking water for Calgarians to accommodate for growth and development.

Wastewater Treatment Upgrades for a Thriving City

The Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant project involved installing a new effluent channel from the Wastewater Treatment Plant to the new Outfall Structure, along with all associated stormwater works.

Location:

Calgary, Alberta

Scope:

Underground, Earthworks, Recycling, Trucking

The Challenge

The Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant Outfall project posed significant challenges, including a complex CN rail crossing requiring precise coordination to remove and reinstall 125m of track within 25 days. KLS needed to complete challenging winter excavation activities to complete the project on time and on budget. Additionally, a gasketed box culvert was needed to manage a watertight environment and eliminate leakage. Bonnybrook required an innovative screening process to remove solids and debris.

The Solution

KLS tackled the Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant Outfall challenges with expert coordination and innovation. For the CN rail crossing, a dedicated team of 75 personnel and subcontractors executed precise excavation, culvert installation, and track reinstatement within the tight 25-day window. Leveraging Calgary’s first gasketed box culvert installation and an advanced screening process, KLS minimized environmental impact and saved the client over $3M in disposal fees, ensuring the project stayed on schedule despite demanding conditions.

The Results

The completion of the Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant Outfall project significantly improved Calgary’s wastewater management infrastructure, ensuring the city can support its growing population while protecting the environment. The upgraded system enhances the treatment and safe discharge of wastewater, reducing the risk of contamination to local waterways. This ensures cleaner water for communities and ecosystems, supports sustainable urban growth, and strengthens Calgary’s resilience to future environmental challenges, benefiting residents today and for generations to come.
