Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant

KLS was awarded the Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant project by Graham Construction in 2018, involving a complex installation of a new effluent channel and storm works. Key achievements include a 25-day CN Crossing overhaul with 75 personnel, twin box culverts, rail track restoration, and a custom screening process that saved over $3M in disposal fees.

Turner Valley Gas Plant Haul

KLS led the remediation of the former Valley Pipeline Tank Farm in Turner Valley, transporting 20,250 tonnes of impacted soil for recycling and disposal, ensuring environmental compliance.

Spyhill Landfill Cell 7 & Overburden

KLS constructed Spyhill Landfill Cell 7, incorporating state-of-the-art liners and drainage systems to ensure secure waste containment while prioritizing environmental protection and sustainability.

Coke Bottling Plant Project

KLS Earthworks & Environmental was contracted by CANA to execute the comprehensive earthworks and underground services for the Coke Bottling Plant Project. The project included the provision and installation of a Master Control Valve (MCV) for incoming water services, temporary water services, water bridges, sanitary and storm sewers, environmental and sediment control, and extensive earthworks.

Banff Trail

KLS completed extensive earthworks and underground work on the Banff Trail project, including asphalt and concrete barrier removals, curb and sidewalk demolition, and excavation for subgrade installation. The project involved decommissioning deep utilities, constructing detours, pathways, and walls with shored excavations, as well as tying into existing infrastructure with detailed excavation for wall bases.

Bucci Sundridge Underground & Earthworks

KLS Earthworks & Environmental was contracted by Bucci Developments to complete the underground and earthworks scope for the Bucci Sunridge project. The comprehensive scope of work included earthworks activities such as topsoil removal, rough grading, detailed excavation, and subgrade preparation, as well as extensive underground infrastructure installations.

Thrift Lodge & Travel Lodge

The Thrift Lodge & Travel Lodge were a side-by-side demolition off 16th Ave NW. The wood structure buildings were two and three stories with a half basement and were in a high traffic area which caused additional sensitivities. This project was completed safely on-time and on-budget.

Site Drainage Upgrades for Alberta Distillers

KLS Earthworks & Environmental was contracted by Alberta Distillers to complete comprehensive site drainage upgrades. The project aimed to enhance the site’s drainage system, ensuring better water management and site stability. The scope of work included clearing, grubbing, mulching, demolition and disposal of existing structures, site fencing, excavation and disposal of asphalt, refuse disposal, and water pumping.

Crowchild Trail Improvements

The Crowchild Trail Short Term Improvement project took place next to live traffic which added key sensitivities. The scope of work included shored excavations for bridge piers and abutments next to live traffic, including structural backfill and temporary piling pads.

The Verve

KLS successfully completed the demolition of the 4-story Verve apartment building, which overhung a neighboring single-family dwelling. The project also involved a single-level parkade. KLS partnered with Sealtech for asbestos abatement and managed all underground utility disconnects. The project was completed on time, within budget, and with a focus on safety and minimal disruption to the surrounding area.

17th Avenue SW Corridor Upgrades

The 17th Avenue SW Corridor project spanned Macleod Trail to 14th St SW, rehabilitating roadways, sidewalks, and underground utilities on one of the city’s busiest streets. It involved removing asphalt and curb, hauling 20,000 m³ of soil, and coordinating with the city and local businesses. This three-year project upgraded vital infrastructure.

McKnight Expansion

In 2014/2015, KLS partnered with Standard General for the McKnight Blvd reconstruction from 12 Street NE to 19 Street NE. The expansion included a new eastbound lane and widened turn channelization. KLS handled asphalt removal and recycling, curb and gutter demolition, fiber optic removal, embankment fill, and offsite excavation. Completed on time, on budget, and coordinated with city traffic needs.

YYC Taxiway Y Development

KLS provided earthworks services to the YYC Taxiway Development project for the Calgary Airport Authority as part of the airport expansion. It included the strip and stockpile of topsoil, rough grade, and excavation for the new taxiway subgrade, removal and savage of existing storm pipes and subdrains, instillation of new subdrain pipes and manholes, new taxiway shoulder and the connection to existing pavement at Taxiways C1 & C3. KLS was able to complete the project on time and on budget within the strict guidelines set out.

17th Avenue BRT Phase 2

The 17th Avenue BRT project spanned from Blackfoot Trail and 9th Ave SE over the Bow river where there was instream berms placed to install the new bridge piers. A new bridge will be built across Deerfoot Trail continuing across the canal up to the intersection of 17th Avenue SE and 26th St SE. It will have an import of over 120,000m³ common fill that will be placed over the next 2 seasons.

Southland & 90th

KLS partnered with Lafarge on the Southland Drive and 90th Avenue SW expansion and the City of Calgary Wastewater project. KLS handled the installation of a plug for a 450mm storm line, pumping bypass setup, storm line and catch basin replacements, and manhole excavation. A 21-truck failsafe ensured uninterrupted pumping, enabling successful project execution with expert personnel and equipment.

Hexavalent Chromium Remediation

KLS responded to an urgent request to contain Cr+6-impacted soil at a commercial Calgary site. Workers donned Tyvek suits and masks with P100 filters to ensure safety during excavation. KLS then transported the material to a Class I landfill near Cynthia, AB, following specialized approval protocols, with 3 a.m. loading to minimize urban traffic disruptions.

High River Flood Mitigation (Phase 2)

The Women’s Coulee High River Flood Mitigation (Phase 2), valued at over $14 million, involved 38+ personnel at peak construction. The work included 5,400 meters of large irrigation line installation, new cross drains, regrading 1,000 meters of canal, and managing over 178,000 m³ of excavation and fill.

Foothills Medical Centre – Site Decommissioning & Demolition

KLS was awarded the contract for demolition and earthworks at Foothills Medical Center’s Parkade P1. The project included demolishing a two-level concrete and steel structure, constructing a gravel/recycled asphalt parking lot, and performing earthworks for Lot 8A. KLS used specialized demolition tools and adhered to stringent safety, eco, and noise guidelines to complete the project safely and efficiently.

Deerfoot & 212

KLS Earthworks & Environmental partnered with EllisDon Construction Services on the Deerfoot & 212 Avenue Interchange for Alberta Transportation. The work completed by KLS included supply and installation of culverts, granular backfill, installation of concrete storm sewers, video inspection of sewer mains, installation of drop inlet assemblies and the installation of a polyvinyl chloride sewer. This project was completed on time and on budget within the specifications issued by Alberta Transportation.

Lethbridge Gas Station Decommission & Demolition

KLS was the successful winner of the bid for this multi-tank removal project. This project required our expertise in the excavation and disposal of impacted soil to a Class 2 landfill. Further to this, we completed the backfill and compacted excavation.

WestJet Wide Body Hangar

KLS successfully won the bid for completing the Earthworks and Deep Underground Utilities for the construction of WestJet’s new wide body hangar at the YYC Airport. KLS excavated and moved 35,000 cubes of soil to stockpile in order to install all site services including water, storm, and sanitary.

Macleod Trail & 162nd Avenue DDI

KLS supported Canada’s first Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) project, collaborating with the City of Calgary and Province on the SW Calgary Ring Road. Our work included asphalt removal, placing 350,000m³ of imported soils, detailed excavation for bridge structures, and placing 70,000 tonnes of drain rock for MSE walls—amid significant traffic and pedestrian disruptions.

Radius Tower

Radius Tower was a large, complicated basement excavation project. KLS remediated the soil and disposed 60,000 tonnes of it at a Class 2 Landfill.

Fox Creek

In October 2016 there was a pipeline spill in Fox Creek. KLS was the successful remediation contractor chosen to complete the excavation of the impacted soil on this active lease area. 30,000 tonnes of impacted soil were disposed of at a class 2 landfill.

Sheerness Mine

KLS constructed a haul road and land treatment cell to transport excavated material by 40 ton rock trucks to the land treatment cell and constructing windrows. Due to high volatile vapor concentration KLS used full mask respiratory protection with OVA cartridges. Air monitoring was performed by a third party consultant.

Arris Tower

KLS handled bulk and detail excavation, backfill, and soil management for a 5-level parkade project in a high-traffic urban area, using advanced safety and traffic protocols. To reduce landfill impact, KLS applied a screen/crush method, segregating recyclable gravel and managing hydrocarbon-impacted soil. The team also coordinated with subcontractors to treat water discharge to City of Calgary standards. Total excavation: ~150,000m³.

Flanders Interchange Project

KLS Earthworks & Environmental was contracted by Volker Stevin for the Flanders Interchange project, a critical infrastructure development aimed at improving traffic flow and safety in the region. The scope of work included topsoil stripping, asphalt and concrete removal, common excavation, and importing fill for bridge structures.

YYC Pond Construction

KLS successfully completed the site earthworks and environmental construction for the new Apron X de-icer pond at Calgary International Airport. The project involved demolishing 2,600m² of taxiway shoulder, removing perimeter fencing and a weather station, and excavating 100,000m³ of topsoil and native material, with the bulk removed in the first 60 days.

Apron “J” and “R”

KLS partnered with PCL, Parsons, and Dufferin in 2011 to complete the McCall Way project, which has been rerouted through two tunnels and under the new taxiway that the Calgary International Airport built during their massive expansion. The project was completed on a tight timeline during which 300,000m3 of material had to be moved in the middle of winter, in addition to a large amount of rock that required excavation. With expertise and dedication, KLS was able to complete the project on time and on budget within the strict guidelines.
