Environmental Remediation and Sustainable Soil Management in Turner Valley
Location:
Turner Valley, Alberta
Scope:
Trucking, Recycling
The Challenge
The remediation of the former Valley Pipeline Tank Farm presented challenges, including safely excavating and transporting 20,250 tonnes of impacted soil while meeting strict environmental regulations. Coordination was critical to manage trucking logistics, ensure driver safety compliance, and adhere to tarping, cleaning, and waste manifesting requirements. Additionally, mitigating potential environmental risks during material handling and disposal required innovative solutions to minimize disruptions and maintain adherence to Alberta Environment and Parks standards throughout the project.

The Solution
KLS partnered with Calgary Aggregate Recycling (CAR) to remediate the impacted material from the former Valley Pipeline Tank Farm. KLS safely excavated and transported 20,250 tonnes of contaminated soil to CAR’s facility, where it was processed using advanced separation and washing techniques. This partnership enabled the recycling of a portion of the material into reusable aggregate, reducing landfill waste and disposal costs. By leveraging CAR’s expertise, KLS ensured environmentally compliant remediation while promoting sustainable resource management.
The Results
The project successfully remediated 20,250 tonnes of contaminated soil, significantly reducing environmental risks and restoring the land to meet regulatory standards. Through KLS’s partnership with Calgary Aggregate Recycling, a substantial portion of the material was recycled into reusable aggregate, minimizing landfill use and conserving natural resources. This sustainable approach not only lowered disposal costs but also reduced the project’s carbon footprint, demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship and creating lasting benefits for the local ecosystem.
