Foothills Medical Centre - Site Decommissioning & Demolition

The demolition of the two-level Foothills Hospital parkade was undertaken to clear the way for future hospital expansion and modernization.

Clearing the Way for Enhanced Healthcare Infrastructure

This critical project required precise planning and execution to ensure safety and minimal disruption to hospital operations while preparing the site for enhanced medical facilities that will better serve Calgary’s growing population.

Location:

Calgary, Alberta

Scope:

Demolition, Recycling, Earthworks, Trucking

The Challenge

The Foothills Medical Center Parkade P1 project presented challenges in safely demolishing a two-level post-tensioned concrete and steel structure adjacent to an active hospital. The project required detailed planning, including engineered demolition, dust and noise control, and safety measures for hospital staff and patients. Transitioning from demolition to excavation and backfill for a new four-level parkade further complicated the scope, demanding precise coordination to ensure minimal disruption to hospital operations and patient care.

The Solution

KLS successfully addressed the challenges by developing a comprehensive demolition and safety plan that included engineered procedures, dust control, noise mitigation, and an eco-plan. Specialized demolition attachments were used to safely dismantle the structure while ensuring minimal disruption to hospital operations. Close collaboration with the general contractor and strict adherence to safety protocols allowed the project to progress smoothly, transitioning efficiently from demolition to excavation and backfill for the new four-level parkade.

The Results

The successful completion of the Foothills Medical Center Parkade P1 project had a significant positive impact on Calgarians. The new four-level parkade increases parking capacity, easing congestion and providing more convenient access to the hospital for patients, visitors, and healthcare workers. This improvement enhances the overall hospital experience, reduces wait times for parking, and supports the efficiency of healthcare services, ultimately contributing to better patient care and a smoother experience for the Calgary community.
