KLS built Spyhill Landfill Cell 7, integrating advanced liners and drainage systems to ensure safe, sustainable waste containment and environmental protection.
Spyhill Landfill Cell 7 & Overburden
Advanced Waste Containment for Sustainable Landfill Management
Location:
Calgary, Alberta
Scope:
Earthworks, Trucking
The Challenge
The Spyhill Landfill Cell 7 project presented challenges in managing the complex excavation and site preparation tasks, including the installation of a multi-layer containment system in an active landfill environment. Coordinating the excavation of overburden, stockpiling, and the installation of intricate drainage and liner systems required precise scheduling to minimize disruption. Additionally, ensuring compliance with stringent environmental regulations for leachate management and leak detection added complexity to the project, requiring careful planning and execution.

The Solution
KLS addressed the challenges by implementing a detailed project plan, ensuring efficient excavation, stockpiling, and grading to prepare the site for the installation of a comprehensive containment system. We utilized advanced materials, including HDPE geomembranes and geocomposite drainage layers, to create a secure waste containment area. Through meticulous coordination and adherence to environmental regulations, including leachate management and leak detection.
The Results
The Spyhill Landfill Cell 7 construction ensures environmental protection by safely containing and managing waste while preventing groundwater contamination. The advanced liner and drainage systems enhance landfill efficiency and sustainability, safeguarding the surrounding ecosystem. By leveraging modern materials and rigorous quality control, KLS delivered a robust infrastructure solution that supports Calgary’s growing waste management needs while adhering to strict environmental regulations.
